Cartoons promote this as a joke, not knowing that they're actually convincing kids to duck out on important nutrition.

If you want to save money and make sure that your children are eating right, the best thing you can do is to make those meals and send them to school with them. It's the only real way to be sure.

This won't be easy or quick. You'll need to learn what actually constitutes a healthy meal in order to make it.

Luckily, most people can whip up a simple healthy meal in a matter of minutes. Read on and learn more about it.

Let's say your kid likes bread - likes it in his or her meals all the time. Give them bread, but healthy bread like whole grain. Let them choose the meal, but you should be the one who will pick what it's made of. You should also add some juice to their meals to make it healthier.

Juice seems like the easiest thing to pack - there are tetra packs out there that claim to be healthy already. Why not just add them? Well the truth is that those supposedly healthy juices are actually filled with artificial flavoring and sugar rather than with actual fruit juice. Find natural juice. It might be a little pricier or even a little more difficult to find, but healthy food requires a commitment. Don't forget to add some vegetables, such as baby carrots and some dip for them.

You'll also want to add protein to their diet to make sure that their meals are well rounded. Lunch meats work or barring that, trail mix can be tasty and healthy at the same time.

Just because your kid is eating healthy doesn't mean that they can't have fun sometimes. Give them a cupcake every now and then - they'll love that.

These days we consider "fresh" foods to be the healthiest option when cooking, but with the fast pace of today´s family life, canned food can play an important part in family mealtimes.

The canning process is carefully controlled to ensure that the substances used in the process do not get into the foods. A 2002 survey found that levels of tin detected in food were substantially lower than 5 years previously. Of all the products tested, 99.5% had concentrations of tin below the legal limits.

There are many benefits to using canned food in your family´s cooking.

Convenience and simplicity! Any meal can be produced in minutes, and there is minimal time spent on food preparation, cooking and clearing up.

There´s always something to eat in an emergency. When stored correctly, canned food can stay in the larder for months. Keeping a supply of staples such as pasta meals, soups, fruit and canned desserts means that if you are feeling tired or unwell, a family meal can be rustled up in minutes. And even the "non-cooking" members of the family should be able to produce an edible meal!

The amount of washing up and cleaning is reduced, as many foods can simply be heated up in a pan or in the microwave.

The variety of canned meals around today is tremendous, so it easy to follow a healthy diet.
